A scoliosis diagnosis, bracing, surgery, and everything in between can come with a lot of unknowns and a lot of fear for some people. At each doctor's appointment, my family and I would anxiously wait to see if my curvatures had progressed. When I was told I would need surgery, that whole process included a lot of unknowns for both my family and I. The unknown of how to prepare for surgery, about the surgery itself, and recovery post surgery. Even after surgery, I would worry if the surgery worked or if I would do something to hurt myself. At times, it seemed as though it was always one thing after another; another test, another doctor's appointment, etc. There were times that I didn't think I would overcome the pain or the stress or every stop crying.
I am here to tell you that while all of this may be true, I overcame it and so will you! While it may not seem like it at the time, everything is temporary. The pain, the tears, the stress, it is all temporary. When you overcome each part of your scoliosis journey, you will have a unique story that you can share with others. A story about how you fought and made it out stronger on the other side. You can do so much more than you believe.
When you are feeling down and don't know what to do next, I know it can be hard to believe there is a light at the end of the tunnel. It is easier to focus on the negative rather than the positive. However, I hope that I can help you through that time. I understand going through the diagnosis, the bracing, and surgery. If you need someone to complain too, I am here. If you need someone to give advice and answer some questions, I am here. Please feel free to reach out on the community forum or message me privately!
When you are feeling down, try some of the following techniques to refocus your mind on more positive things!
Write down 3 things that you are thankful for or that make you happy.
Write down 3 things you love about yourself.
Listen to some music and dance it out!
If you are religious, read the Bible or pray to God. Tell God about your worries and pray for peace and comfort.
Try meditation or muscle relaxation techniques.
Have a self-care night. Take a bath, do a face mask/hair mask, pain your nails, etc.
Get up and move. Do something you like to momentarily distract your mind: take a walk/hike, do some yoga or pilates, dance, workout, etc.
Surround yourself with people you love and who make you laugh.
Read a book, listen to an audiobook, listen to a podcast, or watch your favorite show.
If you need to cry, then do it. Letting out all your emotions can sometimes make you feel better after.
Try some deep breathing exercises (you can always find some on YouTube).
Do something that you enjoy: baking, cooking, cleaning, painting, exercise, etc.
If you are stressed about the unknown, try googling some of your questions to find some answers. At the same time, remember to take everything with a grain of salt because everyone's experience is different.
Look for an in person or online support group to connect with others going through similar experiences. You can always join this group and come back to this website for me ;)

I suffer from chronic pain due to my scoliosis. My orthopedic doctor did an MRI that showed that the muscle, bone, and nerves are twisted around on itself. Unfortunately due to havi severe asthma and complex congenital heart defects I am not a candidate for the surgery to fix my spine. After talking to my primary care doctor we made the decision to increase my dose of pain medication and start narcotics to help me be able to function without too much pain and to be able to take care of my two nephews. My primary care doctor stays in contact with my orthopedic docto which I am grateful fo. I am cared for by Dr. Paul Sponseller at the…
